Arup announces competition winners

Arup, the engineering and planning firm has announced the winner of its sports venue design competition.

Arup invited students aged 12-14 from across London to design and submit plans for a new sports venue. The winning entry was submitted by Jonathan Hoey at Heathcote School and Science College in Waltham Forest, who battled it out through three stages to win the competition.

The competition was set up in partnership with SportsAid, the Construction Youth Trust and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Thirty entries from 11 participating schools across the capital were submitted.

All contestants were judged on a range of criteria, including aesthetics of the build design, sustainability, structure and legacy to the local community.

Bill Grose from Arup says: “Through this competition we have unearthed some truly creative and talented young design engineers. The winner, Jonathan Hoey demonstrated a remarkable understanding and grasp of sports venue design and should be extremely proud of his achievements, in what was a very well fought and competitive contest. Arup is delighted to have conceived this project and will continue to support schools and raise awareness and enthusiasm within the engineering, design and construction industry.”
