Professor advises Government on sustainable construction
A professor from the University of Reading is acting as an advisor to a Government group, aiming to identify how the construction industry can best deliver the future carbon reduction commitments for 2020 and beyond.
Will Hughes, head of the school of construction management and engineering, is a member of the Low Carbon Construction Innovation and Growth Team (IGT), which is focusing on the challenges climate change poses to the construction industry.
Professor Hughes, who sits on the major projects working group says: “It is very encouraging that some of the key figures in all parts of the construction industry, such as clients, architects, contractors, materials suppliers, are part of this agenda-setting exercise.
“While some people are arguing about the causes of climate change, the effects of climate change are already with us. Action is needed now, and it is clear from this work that the construction industry can play a key role in mitigating the effects of climate change.
“I have been very encouraged by how receptive the industry is to suggestions for change that go to the root of how we organize the construction process.”
Interim findings from the IGT have identified four major opportunities for the sector:
• To carry out a huge programme of work over at least the next 40 years
• To reform the structure and practice of the industry
• Export the products and skills of a modernised industry
• Excite future generations into the industry
Its final report will be published later this year.
