Salford’s best at breastfeeding

The University of Salford has been awarded an internationally recognised certificate of commitment in recognition of its breastfeeding training for midwifery students.

The Baby Friendly Initiative was set up by UNICEF and the World Health Organisation to improve the care provided to all mothers and babies. The certificate of commitment recognises that the University of Salford is dedicated to implementing best practice standards in breastfeeding.

Research shows that breastfeeding has health benefits for both mothers and babies. It is the best form of nutrition and reduces the risk of children developing infections in their early years.

The award is the first step towards achieving full accreditation in Baby Friendly Standards.

Anne Leyland from the School of Nursing and Midwifery said: “We know that many women give up breastfeeding before they want to or because they have experienced difficulties that could have been prevented by skilled help.

“By giving our students are given the highest quality training we aim to help women to breastfeed for longer and have healthier babies.”
