Within the Faculty of Environment and Technology, we have about 300 academic staff teaching on courses and working in research centres related to the built and natural environment. Teaching and research on this scale enables specialist work to be combined with a breadth of vision that is increasingly important in environment-related disciplines. Inter-disciplinary teaching and research is a particular strength of UWE’s activity in the built and natural environment.

Our courses are accredited by leading professional bodies, such as the ARB, CIH, CILT, CIOB, CIWEM, RIBA, RICS and RTPI. Most of our courses can be taken as 'conversion courses' by graduates from unrelated disciplines, and can be studied full time and either part time or distance learning.

Postgraduate courses enable students to explore closer to the boundaries of established knowledge, and it is therefore important that they are guided by academics who are themselves developing new theory and practice. In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, research in the built and natural environment was rated 'internationally excellent', 'world leading' and 'internationally recognised'.

Town and Country Planning

Half was rated as ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world leading’
Much of the other half rated as ‘internationally recognised’

Architecture and the Built Environment

45% rated ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world leading
Much of the rest rated as ‘internationally recognised’

Geography and Environmental Studies

70% rated ‘internationally recognised

The RAE 2008 demonstrated that much of UWE’s research equates in quality terms with the highest standards achieved anywhere in UK Higher Education. This, in turn, underpins and informs the quality and content of our taught courses at all levels.
